HOPA donation helps RBG welcome visitors to Cootes Paradise

Hamilton, ON – As a proud supporter of Royal Botanical Gardens’ Growing Up Green Fund, the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) has made a $10,000 commitment over the next two years to help preserve and celebrate Cootes Paradise. The Royal Botanical Gardens’ (RBG) Growing Up Green Fund supports conservation projects and educational opportunities that allow young people to experience and connect with nature.

Along the Princess Point Trail, visitors will come upon Westdale Inlet and a special lookout dedicated to the port authority for its support of the RBG and its mission: to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet. The lookout provides opportunities to view the birds, turtles and fish that call Cootes Paradise home.

“As stewards of Hamilton’s working waterfront, we are interested in minimizing our environmental footprint, and supporting the environmental and recreational uses of Hamilton Harbour,” said Ian Hamilton, President & CEO of HOPA. “This contribution is intended to help more people enjoy and appreciate Cootes Paradise as a treasured part of the Harbour landscape.”

“This funding will allow our educational programs to flourish as we welcome more students and visitors from around the region,” said RBG Director of Business Development, Darlene Bennett-Howes. “On the guided hikes, participants learn about the history of human impact on these wetlands and streams and how RBG in collaboration with other local partners is working to restore them to their original condition.

Intended to inspire and inform, RBG teaches students about the protection and preservation of natural habitats and the species that rely on them for survival. The protected areas around Cootes Paradise also provide a sanctuary for visitors, offering a cool and quiet respite.
