Fluke Transportation Group Growing at the Port of Hamilton

June 4, 2019

Hamilton, ON – Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) and Fluke Transportation Group of Hamilton are pleased to announce a 56,000 sq.ft expansion of Fluke’s warehousing facility at the Port of Hamilton. This expansion builds on the 275,000 sq.ft of warehouse space that Fluke currently operates at the port, providing storage, distribution and value-added warehousing services for a wide variety of food products and consumer goods.

“The need for first class warehouse space is growing and we couldn’t be happier to partner with the Hamilton Port Authority on this exciting venture,” said Kevin Hagen, Senior Vice President & General Manager at Fluke Transportation Group.  “This allows us the opportunity to expand our business with our current customers, offering Hamilton as a full transportation and warehouse distribution center solution.”

As smart, flexible distribution is increasingly important in the consumer goods market, this facility strengthens Fluke’s ability to provide excellent service to its growing customer base. The new facility will feature advanced climate-control for food products, providing in-demand capacity for the region’s $1 billion food sector, and allow Fluke to expand its portfolio of customers who require food-grade warehousing.

The expanded warehouse is being designed with the environment in mind, incorporating high-efficiency lighting in the design. Intelligent use of natural light will reduce energy use and contribute to a brighter, more pleasant work environment.

Located at the Port of Hamilton’s Pier 15, Fluke’s growing facility is strategically positioned within Canada’s busiest consumer market, with direct highway connections to the US border.

“When it comes to expanding warehousing capacity at the port, we couldn’t ask for a better partner than Fluke,” said HPA President & CEO Ian Hamilton. “Fluke’s leadership team shares our vision for a modern, multi-service transportation hub. This expansion is one of the first steps in transforming the Westport area of the port, delivering on our commitment to attract new investment, jobs and economic activity to Hamilton.”

The Fluke expansion is part of Hamilton Port Authority’s $35.5+ million Westport Modernization Project. In 2018, HPA received a $17.7 million investment from the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF) to modernize the Westport zone of the port lands.  This federal investment is matched by HPA, and will see port lands used more efficiently and reconfigured to create new employment land development parcels. The objectives of this project include attracting new investment and economic activity to the Port lands. Fluke’s warehousing expansion is one of the project’s early outcomes, with more investments to come over the next two years.

Since establishment in 1920, Fluke Transportation Group has grown to become southern Ontario’s leader in full-service distribution, providing freight movement and warehousing services throughout Ontario, as well as truckload services through to Quebec, the maritime provinces and western Canada. “In 2020, Fluke is excited to celebrate 100 years based in Hamilton,” notes Fluke’s Kevin Hagen.

The 56,000 square foot expansion is currently in the engineering stage. Construction is expected to start in December 2019 and be completed by July 2020.
