Communications Advisor

HOPA Ports is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Communications Advisor to help build the brand of a leader in transportation and industry in Ontario.

HOPA Ports is the largest port authority in Ontario, managing industrial waterfront properties in Hamilton, Oshawa and Niagara. We’re looking for someone to help tell our stories and propel our strategy. In this vital role, you will have a real impact in building proud, prosperous, and resilient port cities on the Great Lakes.

What you’ll do:

Corporate Communications

  • Reporting to the Director, Public Affairs, you will plan and execute communication strategies to build HOPA’s brand with key stakeholder audiences in southern Ontario and nationally;
  • Lead media relations activities: identify stories, write and distribute articles and media releases, ensuring appropriate reach and effective positioning of key messages;
  • Act as corporate spokesperson as required, and/or prepare subject matter experts for interviews and presentations;
  • Organize media and corporate events;
  • Lead HOPA’s social media strategy and ensure high quality content creation, with the support of the Creative Services Specialist;
  • Develop professional communication tools including print, web, video and social media, managing external designers and suppliers, with the support of the Creative Services Specialist.

Marketing Communications

  • Support HOPA’s business activities through the promotion of port services, commercial-industrial real estate assets, and the Harbour West Marina;
  • Work with HOPA’s Commercial team to plan and implement campaigns to drive customer contact and sales leads, using traditional and digital marketing tools;
  • Develop marketing collateral to support commercial objectives in real estate, property management and cargo; 
  • Support the Harbour West Marina in delivering a proactive customer experience strategy.

Community Relations

  • Oversee HOPA’s corporate social responsibility efforts, to build positive relationships with port stakeholders and communities;
  • Manage HOPA’s charitable donations and sponsorships, developing partnerships that are strategic and impactful in our port communities; 
  • Plan and implement community improvement projects, and develop educational spaces and programming on port lands;
  • Monitor and proactively manage community issues that may impact HOPA’s business and reputation;
  • Lead HOPA’s collaborative relationships with educational institutions;
  • Create opportunities to build awareness of HOPA and its mandate, and deliver on our goal of port city pride (e.g. lead port tours, participation in community events, etc.)

What you bring:

  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, journalism, or similar
  • Six to eight years’ relevant work experience
  • Excellent written communication skills; experience writing for a variety of applications, such as advertisements, blog posts, presentations, articles, marketing materials, etc.
  • Experience planning, developing and leveraging the full range of communications products, including print, video, web and social media
  • Experience with media relations at the national, local and trade level
  • Experience creating marketing campaigns using web and social media, with measurable outcomes
  • Ability to analyze and interpret statistical information for public and media audiences
  • Curious, creative, strategic thinker, with a friendly and collaborative disposition
  • Desire to learn and take on new responsibilities in a growing organization

Nice to have:  

  • Background or experience communicating on topics such as transportation, engineering, real estate, goods movement, economic development, public works, public policy
  • Knowledge of Hamilton, Oshawa and/or Niagara, Ontario, their civic landscapes, community organizations and media markets
  • French language skills an asset

Please note:

This position will require occasional after-hours availability, either on-site or remotely, to respond to urgent requests by news media or external stakeholders. Based in Hamilton, this position will also require occasional attendance at evening/weekend events, as well as occasional travel to conferences or meetings, and HOPA’s locations in Oshawa and Niagara. Access to a personal vehicle is required.

HOPA offers a hybrid work model, subject to an onboarding period and requirements of the role. We require all staff to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

The starting salary range for this position is $72,000-$82,000, plus incentive compensation, pension contribution and comprehensive benefits package.
